Welcome & Announcements

Prelude

Call to Worship - Psalm 150:1–2, 6
Praise the LORD! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens! Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his excellent greatness! …Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the LORD!

Invocation & Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

*Hymn No. 310 - Rejoice, the Lord Is King

*Confession of Faith - The Westminster Confession of Faith VIII, 1 and 5

1. It pleased God, in his eternal purpose, to choose and ordain the Lord Jesus, his only begotten Son, to be the Mediator between God and man, the Prophet, Priest, and King, the Head and Savior of his church, the Heir of all things, and Judge of the world: unto whom he did from all eternity give a people, to be his seed, and to be by him in time redeemed, called, justified, sanctified, and glorified.

5. The Lord Jesus, by his perfect obedience, and sacrifice of himself, which he, through the eternal Spirit, once offered up unto God, hath fully satisfied the justice of his Father; and purchased, not only reconciliation, but an everlasting inheritance in the kingdom of heaven, for all those whom the Father hath given unto him.

Confession of Sin - (unison)
Heavenly Father, we confess our many sins. We have failed to love You with all our heart, soul, and mind, and we have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. Have mercy on us, O Lord. Look upon us in Your tender grace, and help us to see our sins, have true sorrow for them, and grant to us the resolve to live in consistent repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, our Lord. We ask this in His most precious and holy name. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon - Psalm 32:1–2, 5
Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit… I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Evening Worship

Welcome

Call to Worship - Psalm 100
Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth! Serve the LORD with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Know that the LORD, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Invocation

*Hymn No. 168 - I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art

Scripture Reading - 1 Corinthians 1:18–31
For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written,

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”

Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, whom God made our wisdom and our righteousness and sanctification and redemption. Therefore, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

Prayer of Confession - (responsive)

Father in heaven, we thank You for the freedom You have given us through the life, death, and resurrection of Your Son.

But we confess today that we often live like slaves. Instead of living like You delight in us, we avoid You in shame and guilt.

Instead of receiving Your favor as a gift, we try to earn it with our efforts.

Instead of accepting Your freedom, we prefer our chains.

Instead of pursuing Your purposes, we cling to our shortsighted agendas.

Forgive us. Embrace us. Cleanse us. Heal us. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon - 1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

*Hymn No. 149 - Teach Me, O Lord, Your Way of Truth

Pastoral Prayer - Elder Greg Miseyko

Sermon

Rev. Cilas Menezes
Colossians 2:1–5

*Hymn No. 170 - Fairest Lord Jesus
